Her professional and service activities have included being attending professor on the neuropathology clinical service, neuropathology medical school course director, ad hoc member of NIH/NCI AARR/AOIC study sections, editorial board member of the American Journal of Pathology, and Awards Assembly member for the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation. Dr. Chang is best known for her co-discovery and characterization of the Kaposi’s sarcoma-association herpesvirus (KSHV/HHV8), the newest human DNA tumor virus. Her research interests target virus-host cell interactions that result in proliferation and oncogenesis. In recognition of her work, Dr. Chang has received a variety of awards including the James S. McDonnell Scholar Award, the Lamport Award for Excellence in Clinical Science Research (Columbia Presbyterian Hospital), the Meyenburg Prize for Cancer Research, the Robert Koch Prize, the Mott Prize of the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation, and the Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research (Memorial Sloan-Kettering). She is presently a Professor of Pathology and the Director of the KSHV Laboratory of the Molecular Virology Program at the Hillman Cancer Center, University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.
