Biographical statement

Dr. Arcasoy’s research interests include mechanisms of hematopoiesis regulation and cytokine receptor biology, focusing on regulation of red blood cell production in health and disease, as well as erythropoietin receptor expression, structure and function in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic systems. His work has involved identification of mutations in the erythropoietin receptor gene associated with primary familial and congenital polycythemia syndromes, and characterization of erythropoietin receptor structure-function relationships and signal transduction abnormalities associated with excessive red blood cell production. Dr. Arcasoy’s laboratory has also focused on investigation of novel biologic effects of erythropoietin in non-hematopoietic tissues and organs, such as a previously unrecognized function for erythropoietin during wound healing, and the characterization of erythropoietin-mediated signal transduction and cardioprotection mechanisms in the heart. More recently, Dr. Arcasoy has studied the complex role of erythropoietin and its receptor in tumor biology, investigating erythropoietin signaling as an angiogenic factor and potential target to modulate tumor angiogenesis and progression in experimental cancer models.
