Dr. Kathleen Liu is a nephrologist and intensivist, whose research has focused on the intersection of these two fields. In her clinical work, she is the Medical Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit at the main hospital at UCSF Health and of the Apheresis/Hemodialysis Unit.The overarching theme of her research program is improving outcomes in patients with the acute respiratory distress syndrome and acute kidney injury. Her work has focused on improving outcomes in patients with the acute respiratory distress syndrome and acute kidney injury by (1) identifying the biological pathways that underlie human disease, (2) developing novel conceptual paradigms for fluid management and (3) testing therapeutic strategies through the design and execution of pivotal clinical trials.
