Renda Soylemez Wiener, MD, MPH is a pulmonary and critical care physician, health services researcher, and implementation scientist. She is an Associate Professor at Boston University School of Medicine and the Associate Director of the Center for Healthcare Organization & Implementation Research (CHOIR), the largest of 18 VA HSR&D Centers of Innovation nationally. She attended Harvard College, Columbia P&S (MD), and the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy & Clinical Practice (MPH). She has served on the faculty of Dartmouth Medical School (2007-09) and Boston University School of Medicine (2009-present).

The goal of Dr. Wiener’s work is to improve patient-centeredness and mitigate iatrogenic harms of medical care by improving knowledge translation, promoting high-quality communication and shared decision-making between patients and clinicians, and de-implementing low value practices. Funded by the NIH, VA HSR&D, VA QUERI, and PCORI, her research has focused on two core areas: 1) Identifying and de-implementing low value, potentially harmful practices in pulmonary and critical care, and 2) Defining and implementing patient-centered strategies to optimize the ratio of benefits to harms in lung cancer screening and pulmonary nodule evaluation. Her innovative work has had international reach and impact scientifically, with over 5900 total citations, as well as on health policy and clinical practice, with recommendations derived from her research appearing in multiple clinical practice guidelines.

Dr. Wiener is deeply committed to developing the next generation of scientists. She serves as multi-PI of an NHLBI K12 training program in implementation science and has won awards for her mentorship.
