My research has focused on characterizing the prevalence, risk factors, biomarkers and intervention for COPD and asthma in resource-limited settings of low- and middle-income countries. Specifically, I have led large population-based observational studies and randomized controlled trials in Peru, Uganda, Nepal, Bangladesh, India, Guatemala and Rwanda to characterize risk factors for COPD and asthma across the lifespan or test interventions to mitigate risk factors such as household air pollution. Over the last decade, I have focused my research on investigating the association between biomass fuel smoke exposure and cardiopulmonary outcomes and have conducted randomized controlled trials of improved cookstoves to reduce biomass fuel smoke exposure and health outcomes across the lifespan. I have been involved in National Institutes of Health sponsored networks of Non-Communicable Chronic Diseases including the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute sponsored Global Health Initiative. I am Principal Investigator of one the Global Environmental and Occupational Health Hub National Institutes of Health sponsored network and a Principal Investigator for the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Household Air Pollution Intervention Network trial. I am also involved in critical care research ongoing research projects on management of mechanical ventilation, observational studies of the acute respiratory distress syndrome, and evaluation of patient centered-outcomes in the United States and abroad.
