Job board of the American Society for Clinical Investigation

Director, Center for Health Equity Research and Innovation: Beth Israel Lahey Health, Boston, Massachusetts

This is an exciting opportunity for a nationally recognized physician or health disparities researcher to build a major center for health equity research focused on general internal medicine and the complex issues of equity and disparities that take center stage nationally and internationally. In addition to the financial support provided by the Koplow-Tullis Chair, the inaugural Director will receive a generous start-up package to build the Center, including recruitment of additional faculty and staff. Additional resources will be provided commensurate with the candidate's interests in innovation, research and clinical programs.

The Opportunity

In collaboration with colleagues in the Department of Medicine and across BIDMC, BILH, and Harvard Medical School’s hospital affiliates, this Director will lead groundbreaking research and innovation initiatives focused on general medicine, including the fields of primary care and hospital medicine, epidemiology, population health, and implementation science. The Director will develop the Center to be a major force nationally in efforts to advance research in health disparities and solutions to improve health equity.

The Center is envisioned as a multidisciplinary research venture that builds on a strong body of existing work to investigate causes, previously unknown impacts, and novel solutions to health disparities that could impact immediate patient communities and inform policy changes to expand reach. Programs and activities in the Center will closely interact and synergize with the recently launched BIDMC Institutional Strategic Plan for Innovation, Research and Education (InSPIRE BIDMC) and with the BILH Diversity Equity and Inclusion team, particularly around health equity system goals and strategic priorities.

The Ideal Candidate

The inaugural Director will be a recognized thought leader in health equity and disparities and will demonstrate a track record of significant publications and extramural funding in a research area related to these areas. This leader will have a national standing in the field of health equity research, possess the attributes necessary to create and grow a successful research group, obtain extramural funding, and influence progress in this field. The Director will have a particular concern for the needs of the underrepresented, under-served and economically disadvantaged and shall have manifested considerable energy and creativity as a teacher/mentor. In addition, they shall have conducted and sponsored research that proved provocative in challenging convention and opening important new areas of inquiry.
