David Hains is a Pediatric Nephrologist and Division Chief with a career focused on excellence in clinical innovation, research, education, and quality.  He has 11 provisional patents submitted, continuous PI R01-equivalent NIH support since 2010, 87 peer reviewed manuscripts with an h-index of 29 and cited over 2600 times including senior/corresponding authorship in high-impact journals JAMA, Nature Communications, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and Clinical Translational Medicine.  His research on the innate immune system of the kidney and urinary tract has provided foundational insight and identified genetic variations associated with urinary tract infection risk in children.  He also discovered the initial serologic response of COVID-19 in children on dialysis and healthcare workers. He has mentored multiple trainees with two former trainees who are now tenure track, R01funded pediatric nephrologists.  He has served multiple NIH grant study sections including Chair of O’Brien Urology Centers of Excellence Study Section.  He rose from Assistant Professor to Full Professor with Tenure in eight years. 

Since 2017, he has built one of the largest research-focused faculties in Pediatric Nephrology with 7 of his 11 faculty members having NIH salary support and 5 of which have been PI’s on NIH grants.  His Division has risen from 34 in US News and World Report ranking to 12 in 2023.  He serves as the Co-Chair for the UTI Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics.  For the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology, he has Chaired the Research Committee, co-leads the Advocacy Scholars Program, is a member of the Executive Committee for Leadership Development, and was an Executive Council Member.  He has also participated on two standard setting committees for the American Board of Pediatrics.
