Elected 2024

Dr. Ibrahim is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Physiology; she is a pediatric transplant hepatologist and a physician scientist. Samar is the Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded lipotoxicity and liver inflammation laboratory at Mayo Clinic. She studies mechanisms of liver injury and inflammation in metabolic dysfunction associated steatohepatitis (MASH) formerly known as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), with the goal to identify novel biomarkers and mechanism-based therapeutic targets. Her recent work examines the pathogenic role of liver sinusoidal cells (LSEC) endotheliopathy in MASH and identified vascular adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM1) as a potential novel therapeutic target in MASH. Dr. Ibrahim and her research team have also examined the role of hepatocyte-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) as MASH biomarkers, as well as mediators of intercellular communication in MASH pathobiology. They defined the role of integrin β1-enriched EVs in mediating circulating monocyte adhesion to LSEC and liver inflammation in MASH. Dr. Ibrahim studied the role of the stress kinase mixed lineage kinase (MLK)3 in MASH and have shown that genetic and pharmacologic inhibition of MLK3 is salutary in murine MASH. Dr. Ibrahim is the director of the Pilot and Feasibility program at the Digestive Disease Center at Mayo Clinic. She serves on NIH study sections, as well as a reviewer for international funding agencies. Dr. Ibrahim has mentored numerous medical students, residents, and postdoctoral fellows. She is an associate editor for Hepatology, the vice chair of the American Association of the study of liver Disease (AASLD) pediatric special interest group, and the vice chair of the AASLD basic science committee. Dr. Ibrahim is the Medical Director of the Pediatric Liver Transplant Program at Mayo clinic and is interested in studying liver graft dysfunction and developing models that better predict the acuity of the pediatric liver transplant candidate on the wait list.
