Elected 2024

Christian S. Hinrichs, M.D., is a physician-scientist and leader in the development of cell therapy for HPV-associated cancer and other solid tumors. He serves as Co-Director of the Duncan and Nancy MacMillan Cancer Immunology and Metabolism Center of Excellence, Chief of the Section of Cancer Immunotherapy, and Co-Leader of the Cancer Metabolism and Immunology Program at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ). Dr. Hinrichs completed a postdoctoral fellowship in tumor immunology at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) – Surgery Branch under Steven A. Rosenberg, M.D., Ph.D., and Nicholas P. Restifo, M.D. Although initially trained in surgical oncology, he retrained in medical oncology at the NCI Medical Oncology Branch. Dr. Hinrichs was a tenured Senior Investigator at the NCI before moving to CINJ. His research in tumor-infiltrating T cell therapy for HPV-associated cancers has shown that an adoptive T cell treatment can mediate complete regression of epithelial cancer in humans. His work in T cell receptor gene-engineered T cells has demonstrated that these therapies can have marked clinical activity in metastatic HPV-associated cancer, including checkpoint inhibitor-refractory disease. His current work is extending these findings and discovering new TCR-based treatments for a wide range of cancers and cancer-related infections. Dr. Hinrichs has been honored by selection to the NCI Clinical Investigator Development Program and to the NIH Lasker Clinical Scholars Program. He has served as a member of the NRG Oncology Cervix Committee and the US Oncology Drug Advisory Committee. He presently serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancers. His laboratory is funded by NIH awards, the Duncan and Nancy MacMillan Cancer Immunology and Metabolism Center of Excellence, and collaborative agreements.
