Lisa R. Young, MD is Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn). She is also Associate Director of the Penn-CHOP Lung Biology Institute.

Her research focuses on rare lung diseases, with both patient-oriented and laboratory-based approaches to study of genetic and interstitial lung diseases in children. Her work on the roles of alveolar epithelial cells and epithelial-macrophage interactions in the regulation of pulmonary fibrosis in Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome (HPS) has elucidated key aspects of the cell biology and disease pathogenesis. Her contributions in Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) include development of a serum VEGF-D as a clinically-available biomarker. Leveraging patient cohorts and genetic discovery in Neuroendocrine cell Hyperplasia of Infancy (NEHI, a form of childhood ILD), her laboratory is now engaged in studies focused on mechanistic investigations of disease pathogenesis utilizing a novel mouse model. She is the principal investigator of the 22-center U.S. national registry and observational study in childhood rare lung diseases which provides a platform for a spectrum of clinical and translational research.

Prior to joining CHOP, Dr. Young was an Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine, and Cell and Developmental Biology at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Young is a graduate of the University of Virginia, completed medical school and residency training at Duke University, followed by fellowship training in Pediatric Pulmonology and Adult Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati. She has mentored fellows in pediatric pulmonary and adult pulmonary/critical care training programs, as well as a number of students, residents, and junior faculty in several subspecialties.
