Dr. Aliyu is Professor of Health Policy and Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Associate Director for Research at the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health. He attended medical school at the Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria and completed graduate training in public health at the George Washington University (MPH) and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (DrPH). For 6 years, he directed Vanderbilt’s HIV prevention and treatment program in Nigeria that was funded by the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Dr. Aliyu is a Principal Investigator (PI) of several NIH-funded research and training grants. His research interests are in the prevention and treatment of HIV-associated comorbidities and in developing evidence-based interventions to improve the quality of HIV services in low- and middle-income settings using implementation science approaches. He is the recipient of several awards, including the UAB Alumni Award for Scientific Excellence, the Mayo Foundation’s William Summerskill Award for Outstanding Research Achievement, the Zenith Global Health Award, and the American College of Preventive Medicine’s William Kane ‘Rising Star’ award, among others.
