Dr. Shaukat's research in colon cancer screening outcomes and quality indicators for colonoscopy have informed guidelines for colon cancer screening and colonoscopy quality indicators. She performed the longterm follow up of the Minnesota fecal occult blood trial, and demonstrated that there is a sustained benefit of screening on colon cancer mortality through 30 years, and that the magnitude of the benefit differs for men and women at different ages. These findings have been used to inform the US Multi-society task force and the US preventive services task force guidelines of CRC screening. She has also investigated and established withdrawal time and adenoma detection rates as key quality indicators for screening colonoscopy. These metrics are part of the guidelines for quality indicators for screening colonoscopy published by the US multi-society task force, and widely used by insurers and CMS as metrics tied to high value care and reimbursement.
