Dr. Kirkpatrick received her medical degree from Albany Medical College and performed an internal medicine residency and chief residency at the University of Rochester. She trained as a clinical and research Infectious Disease fellow at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and performed additional training in clinical tropical medicine. She joined the University of Vermont as faculty in late 1999. She began her research studying enteric pathogens, vaccines and human mucosal immunology. At UVM, Dr. Kirkpatrick founded and directs the UVM Vaccine Testing Center, a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to decreasing the burden of infectious diseases globally through the study and development of vaccines. In addition to the performance of phase I-III clinical trials and human experimental infection models, her research works to advance understanding of human immune responses to infections and vaccines, as well as immune correlates of protection. Dr. Kirkpatrick’s research team has a particular focus on defining correlates and protection and vaccine development for the flaviviruses, especially a tetravalent Dengue vaccine, as well as enteric infections such as Cryptosporidium, Rotavirus, and Campylobacter jejuni.
