My current research has 3 broad areas of inquiry: (1) understanding how variations in care systems influence patient outcomes (for example, roles of specialists and generalists, the hospitalist model, or 'comanagement' of surgical patients by hospitalists), (2) characterizing gaps in care quality and evaluation of quality improvement interventions, particularly in the context of electronic health records.

I am working to apply these three themes in the efforts of a large research network, which will become a national laboratory within which we will carry out large-scale evaluation of healthcare improvement interventions, with a particular focus on approaches to reducing diagnostic errors and improving patient safety
