more the maintenance of body fluid and electrolyte balance and blood pressure, and their changes in disease. In particular, his group has played an important role in identifying the cellular and molecular processes of a key anatomical site within the kidney, the juxtaglomerular apparatus (JGA), which controls renal blood flow, glomerular filtration rate, and the renin-angiotensin system. His main goal is to identify the key molecular players in various renal pathologies as potential therapeutic targets, and translate this information in the preclinical development of new therapeutic approaches for the better treatment of kidney and cardiovascular diseases. His laboratory pioneered several applications of intravital imaging using multiphoton fluorescence microscopy for the direct and quantitative visualization of kidney functions in various models of chronic kidney disease, hypertension and diabetes. His imaging approach to track the fate and function of individual cells in the same region of the intact living kidney over several days, during disease development, provided new visual clues regarding the highly dynamic glomerular environment, tissue remodeling, and endogenous repair processes. Dr. Peti-Peterdi received his doctoral and medical degrees from Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary, and conducted his postdoctoral work with Darwin Bell at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has received a number of prestigious awards, including the Gottschalk Award from the American Society of Nephrology, the American Physiological Society Renal Section Young Investigator Award and an American Heart Association Established Investigatorship.
