Elected 2014

Dr. Ferrante is the Tilden-Weger-Bieler Professor of Medicine at Columbia University, Chief of Preventive Medicine & Nutrition, Co-Director of the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center, and an Attending Physician at New York–Presbyterian Hospital. He received his undergraduate degree in physics from Yale University and his M.D. and Ph.D. from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. After completing a residency in internal medicine at New York–Presbyterian Hospital, he performed postdoctoral studies at Columbia University. The Ferrante laboratory studies systemic metabolism, with a focus on the function of the immune system in metabolism. Changes in the metabolic state of tissues, including the development of obesity, fasting, lipolysis, and thermogenic challenges are sensed by the immune system. The immune responses to these challenges are complex but appear to be adaptive, restoring local homeostasis and contributing to the regulation of lipid trafficking locally and systemically. Dr. Ferrante received a Lucille Markey Fellowship, the Dr. Harold H. Lamport Biomedical Research Prize and the Lewis Katz Cardiovascular Prize. He has given the Gunnar Birke Lecture at the Karolinska Institute and the John Loeb Lecture at Columbia University, and was the Gill Cardiovascular Visiting Professor at the University of Kentucky. He has served on the editorial boards of the journals JCI, Diabetes, and Obesity.
