more his research in medical cost-effectiveness has developed methods to account for future costs due to life extension, to prospectively value and prioritize research projects, and to assess the value of individualized care. He has examined these issues primarily in the context of diabetes and prostate cancer. In hospital medicine, he has focused on understanding the role of experience in determining the effectiveness of hospitalists and developed the inpatient medicine services at the University of Chicago and other institutions as a laboratory for clinical and outcomes research, enrolling over 80,000 patients in clinical outcomes studies in diverse areas including quality of care, the care of older patients, graduate medical education, physician learning, and pharmacogenomics. At the University of Chicago he is on the faculty of the Departments of Medicine and Economics, and the Harris School of Public Policy, and directs the Program in Hospital Medicine and the Center for Health and the Social Sciences.
