About the awardee

Dr. David Bayne, MD, MPH has followed his path as a physician-scientist led by a deep commitment to addressing delays in surgical care, particularly in urinary stone disease (USD). As a medical student and resident, he participated in research and clinical rotations in Haiti, Colombia, and Guyana, where he saw firsthand the consequences of disparities in access to surgical care. This experience sparked his interest in health equity and inspired his focus on using research to champion it.

During Dr. Bayne's urology residency at UCSF, he pursued an MPH at UC Berkeley to build the methodological foundation for disparities research. As a resident and fellow, he led studies identifying independent associations between low socioeconomic status and delayed presentation for USD treatment. As an Assistant Professor of Urology, his initial research was funded by the UCSF-Kaiser UroEpi K12 award, through which he conducted large dataset analyses and surgical outcomes research. These studies demonstrated a clear link between barriers to health care access, more invasive surgical treatment, and worse outcomes in USD. He was recently awarded a K23 career development award where he will be developing targeted interventions to prevent care delays in the treatment of USD.

To date, Dr. Bayne has published 49 peer-reviewed papers, including 14 as first author and 9 as senior author. His research has consistently shown that patients who experience care delays require multiple procedures and undergo more complex surgeries for USD.
