About the awardee

Yuri Kim, MD, PhD is an early-career physician-scientist, who studies genetic and molecular mechanisms of cardiomyopathy with a goal of developing therapeutic strategies for heart failure. She graduated summa cum laude from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology before moving to the United States to investigate transcriptional regulation of cardiac development and remodeling for PhD studies under mentorship of Dr. Eric Olson at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Kim received her MD from Stanford University and completed internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital, cardiovascular medicine fellowship and advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. She gained further expertise in cardiovascular genetics while pursuing postdoctoral research fellowship with Drs. Christine and Jonathan Seidman at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Kim’s current and recent research work includes (1) Human genetic sequencing analysis to understand genetic contribution to cardiovascular disease, (2) Studying genetic and environmental contributors to pathogenesis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and (3) Single-nucleus RNA-sequencing analysis to elucidate cellular and transcriptional profiles of cardiomyopathy. Her work has been recognized by multiple merit awards and invitation to speak at national and international meetings. As a recipient of NIH K08 award, Dr. Kim plans to study how expression of the essential gene titin, the most common genetic cause of cardiomyopathy, is regulated with an ultimate goal of bridging molecular biology, genetics, and heart failure to develop novel treatment options for patients with heart failure.
