About the awardee

Joseph Scarpa, MD, PhD is a physician-scientist and Van Poznak Research Scholar in the Department of Anesthesiology at Weill Cornell Medicine. Trained in computational biology, his research focuses on the use of artificial intelligence and omic technologies in perioperative care. His work has been published in numerous journals, including Nature Medicine, Nature Communications, Science Advances, Cancer Research, Biological PsychiatryAnesthesiology, and the British Journal of Anaesthesia. His most recent work studies the effect of opioids on immunotherapy. 

Before joining Weill Cornell, he earned his MD and PhD at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he studied multi-omic mechanisms of sleep and neuropsychiatric disease. This work was supported by a National Research Service Award from the NIH (F30).
