About the awardee

Peter Miller, MD, PhD is a physician-scientist dedicated to the pursuit of a research career founded in basic science that seeks to address questions of imminent importance to human disease. He received Bachelor’s degrees in Chemical Engineering and Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, then obtained an MD and PhD from Harvard University where he studied the biology of leukemia stem cells in Dr. Gary Gilliland’s laboratory. He completed his internal medicine training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and fellowship in oncology and hematology from the Dana Farber Cancer Institute / Massachusetts General Hospital program. His postdoctoral work in Dr. Benjamin Ebert’s laboratory at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute focused on understanding how somatic mutations arise in hematopoietic stem cells, contribute to leukemic transformation, and influence aberrant inflammatory programs.  Dr. Miller is now an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and runs a laboratory at the Massachusetts General Hospital in the Center for Cancer Research. He is an Associate Member of the Center for Regenerative Medicine, Associate Member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and member of the Dana Farber Harvard Cancer Center Leukemia program. Dr. Miller dedicates 80% of his professional effort to laboratory investigation of the biology of hematologic malignancies, with a particular focus on clonal hematopoiesis and the evolution to leukemia. They utilize human genetics, functional approaches, and mouse models to understand how mutations in blood stem cells drive the development of leukemia and inflammatory diseases. They strive to develop novel and clinically actionable approaches to prevent and treat hematologic diseases. Clinically, Dr. Miller attends on the inpatient leukemia service. Their work has been recognized and funded by numerous organizations including the National Cancer Institute, the Department of Defense, the Edward P. Evans Foundation, the Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation, and the American Society of Hematology.
