About the awardee

Margaret L. Salisbury, MD, MS is a physician-scientist, Assistant Professor, and faculty member of the Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) Program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). She is a cum laude graduate of the University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia, Missouri. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Rush University Medical Center and clinical and research fellowships in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Michigan. Her clinical experiences in caring for patients with ILDs have inspired her research program, which aims to understand the natural history of and risk factors for pulmonary fibrosis, with a long-term goal to develop novel therapies and preventative interventions for this devastating disease. Dr. Salisbury’s research has shaped modern understanding of the role of environmental exposures in the development of pulmonary fibrosis and other ILDs. Widely recognized as a field-leader in this area, she served as a member of several international guideline committees and is a sought-after speaker at national and international meetings. Her first and last author manuscripts have been published in top Pulmonology journals, including the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, and her work has been funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI).
