Dr. Tai is a physician-scientist at the University of Michigan who studies the cell biology of positive-sense RNA virus infection. He received his undergraduate degree in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard College and his MD and PhD degrees from Weill Medical College of Cornell, where he performed his graduate work on the cell biology of rhodopsin trafficking with Dr. Ching-Hwa Sung. He then completed a residency in internal medicine at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, where he worked in Dr. Raymond Chung's laboratory to identify cellular factors necessary for hepatitis C virus replication using whole-genome RNAi screens. Dr. Tai's laboratory has since pivoted from HCV to related RNA viruses, principally flaviviruses such as dengue, Zika, and West Nile virus, but has continued to focus on identifying and characterizing the cell biology of viral infection and the cellular factors/processes that are hijacked during viral infection. He also co-directs the preclinical medical school curriculum at the University of Michigan Medical School and has received multiple teaching awards for undergraduate and graduate medical education.
