Elected 2022

Rachel Lynne Zemans, MD, MA is Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and the Cellular and Molecular Biology Program at the University of Michigan. She received her BS in Biological Sciences and MA in Philosophy from Stanford University and her MD from Johns Hopkins University. She completed training in Internal Medicine at UCSF and Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Colorado. She studies mechanisms of regeneration of the alveolar epithelium after injury how these mechanisms go awry in the pathogenesis of lung diseases such as ARDS and pulmonary fibrosis. Her work has uncovered mechanisms underlying alveolar epithelial cell proliferation and differentiation during regeneration. She identified a transitional cell state that emerges transiently during normal regeneration but persists with ineffectual differentiation in pulmonary fibrosis. Dr. Zemans serves on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Respiratory Cellular and Molecular Biology and JCI Insight.
