Dr. Bailey is a physician-scientist at Johns Hopkins University who studies B cell and antibody responses against viral pathogens, including hepatitis C virus and SARS-CoV-2. He earned his MD and PhD degrees through the Medical Scientist Training Program at Johns Hopkins University, earning his PhD for studies of HIV latency under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Siliciano. He subsequently completed internal medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and Infectious Diseases fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, performing postdoctoral research under the mentorship of Dr. Stuart Ray. He subsequently joined the faculty of Johns Hopkins University in 2013. Clinically, he cares for patients with viral hepatitis and HIV infection. His research laboratory studies B cell and antibody responses against hepatitis C virus (HCV) and SARS-CoV-2. His research to date has focused primarily on the role of neutralizing antibodies in natural control of HCV, isolating some of the first monoclonal antibodies from persons who had naturally cleared HCV infection, and demonstrating that these antibodies did not require extensive mutation to become broadly protective against HCV.
