Dr. Wang’s research interests focus on understanding the roles of protein and RNA homeostasis in health and disease with a particular relevance to neurodegeneration. As Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins University, he studies the fundamental mechanisms by which cells sense stressful situations and make the necessary adaptations at both the protein and RNA levels. His work has led to the identifications of key signaling and quality control pathways that regulate protein synthesis or degradation as well as RNA metabolism. When these quality control systems go awry, disease conditions such as neurodegeneration may develop. Dr. Wang’s ongoing studies are aimed at defining the pathogenic mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, frontotemporal dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease, and laying a foundation for developing novel therapeutic interventions.
