Gregory A. Roth, MD, MPH, is Associate Professor in the Division of Cardiology at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington. Dr. Roth leads cardiovascular research for the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study, a multinational effort to address the demand for timely, locally relevant, and evidence-based data on health. His group has developed new methods for estimating the global burden of heart and vascular diseases. Results of this work are relied upon by the World Health Organization and a range of governments and NGOs.

His research has focused on novel approaches to investigating health disparities and inefficiencies in health care delivery at a global scale. This work shows that effective treatments for heart and vascular disease are not reaching the patients who need them, a gap that is a major determinant of geographic disparities in health. He has examined the role of demographic shifts on the global epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases, developed a new approach to forecasting cardiovascular disease to evaluate the potential impact of risk factor reduction, estimated global disease burden due to rheumatic heart disease for all countries, and developed a new model of estimating lifetime risk of stroke globally. His work has been published in the NEJM, the Lancet, JAMA, Circulation, and wide range of media outlets.

Dr. Roth is among the first global health researchers to turn their attention to cardiovascular diseases and has pioneered the application of health metric sciences to the field of cardiology. Funding sources for his work has included the National Institutes of Health (NIA and NHLBI), the American Heart Association, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
