Elected 2020

Dr. Allen is a transplant cardiologist who combines clinical care, operations, research, and education into a synergistic mix of duties around improved care delivery for advanced heart failure. His primary research interest has been to better anticipate progression into end-stage heart failure and then help patients make tough choices regarding invasive therapies and palliative options. He is co-founder of the Colorado Program for Patient Centered Decisions (https://patientdecisionaid.org/). His team recently completed a multicenter trial of decision support for patients and their caregivers offered a left ventricular assist device (the DECIDE-LVAD trial) and now is working to disseminate these results to all LVAD programs across the United States (I-DECIDE-LVAD, 2019-2022). His team is also investigating tools to increase patient engagement around heart failure medication prescribing decisions (the EPIC-HF trial, 2016-2020). He is an active volunteer, recently serving as Chair for the AHA Committee for Heart Failure and Transplantation, and has helped lead a number of scientific statements. The other half of his time he spends as Associate Division Head for Clinical Affairs in Cardiology and Medical Director of Advanced Heart Failure at the University of Colorado, keeping himself grounded by regularly seeing patients with heart failure, LVADs, and transplants. He is consistently voted in 5280 Magazine as one of Denver’s “Top Doctors”.
