Dr. Adrian Vella is a Professor of Medicine in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and has been on staff at Mayo Clinic Rochester since June 2001. Dr. Vella is a graduate of the University of Malta Medical School (1993). He came to Rochester for his Internal Medicine Residency in 1995 and was subsequently accepted to the Clinician-Investigator track of Endocrine Fellowship training program and completed this in 2001, subsequently joining the consulting staff at Mayo Clinic. Currently, Dr. Vella serves as the research chair for the Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism.Dr. Vella uses genetic variation associated with type 2 diabetes as probes to better understand the pathophysiology of prediabetes and the mechanisms driving the progression to type 2 diabetes. His focus has been on the measurement of insulin secretion and action in vivo integrated with the upper gut response to nutrient ingestion. His clinical interests include the diagnosis and management of hypoglycemic disorders such as insulinoma and hypoglycemia post-Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass.
