Dr. Rachel Berger's work has focused on the field of child physical abuse and specifically on improving early identification of physical abuse using multiple approaches including serum biomarkers, clinical decision rules and EHR-based clinical decision support. She is the first child abuse pediatrician in ASCI. She also has served on the editorial board of Pediatrics, on the Pennsylvania Task Force on Child Protection and most recently the research lead for the Obama Commission to Eliminate Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities. She has over 90 peer-reviewed publication, 12 book chapters, and numerous invited reviews, editorials, and letters to the editor. In the past several years, she has published a several important studies in her field including a prospective multi-center validation of the Biomarkers of Infant Brain Injury Score (BIBIS) which identifies acute intracranial hemorrhage in well-appearing infants. The publication ranked in the top 5% of all research published in 2017 in terms of the attention it garnered as measured by an Altmetrics score of 591. In addition, she published the prospective validation of the Pittsburgh Infant Brain Injury Score (PIBIS), which uses readily available clinical variables to identify which infants at increased risk of abusive head trauma should go undergo neuroimaging and which can be safely discharged home without neuroimaging. Finally, she published several studies in the field of informatics about the development and use of an electronic health record embedded child abuse clinical decision support system. Clinically, she has been a member of the Child Protection Team at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh for 17 years and the chief of the division of Child Advocacy for the past 5 years.
