Dr. Kahn’s research program focuses on the organization, management, and financing of critical care services in the United States. Specific areas of interest include ICU workforce and staffing, quality measurement, benchmarking, and regionalization of critical and emergency care. His work integrates approaches from the fields of epidemiology, health services research, health economics and operations management to investigate novel strategies for improving the quality and efficiency of care for seriously ill hospitalized patients. His scientific accomplishments include expanding the evidence base for key ICU staffing models including interprofessional care, intensivist physician staffing, and telemedicine; characterizing volume-outcome relationships in critical care; and developing novel statistical methods for ICU quality measurement. He also works to translate his research into practice, having advised several state and federal agencies on health care policy related to hospital medicine and critical care.
