Biographical statement

Dr. de Lemos is Professor of Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and holds the Sweetheart Ball-Kern Wildenthal, MD, PhD Distinguished Chair in Cardiology. He is also the Cardiology Service Chief at Parkland Memorial Hospital. His primary research interests are in early detection, risk assessment and management of cardiovascular disease, with a particular focus on the role of cardiovascular biomarkers. This research is performed within the Dallas Heart Study, a multi-ethnic population-based study, as well as within clinical trials and national registries. He is the Medical Director of the Dallas Heart Study and Chair of the Research and Publications Committee for the NCDR ACTION-GWTG registry in acute coronary syndromes. He was the lead author of the Z phase of the A to Z trial, an international trial investigating different cholesterol lowering strategies in patients with acute coronary syndromes. His team has evaluated existing biomarkers such as B-type natriuretic peptide, C-reactive protein and cardiac troponins as well as novel biomarkers reflecting biological pathways of disease. His recent work has focused on measurement of small amounts of subclinical myocardial injury, detected via new high sensitivity assays, as a biomarker of unrecognized structural heart disease and a powerful predictor of heart failure risk in the population.
