Dr. Tobias B. Huber is Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the III. Department of Medicine at the University Medical Center in Hamburg-Eppendorf. His translational research program involves model organisms, transgenic mouse models, high-throughput screenings, systems biology, and high-resolution imaging approaches to elucidate glomerular signaling programs in health and disease. His team identified several key molecular mechanisms of podocyte biology and progressive glomerular disease. Specifically, his work identified signaling programs that regulate podocyte cell survival, endocytosis, cytoskeletal organization, and polarity, providing novel insight of how podocytes contribute to glomerular diseases. Recently, Huber’s team established a role of mTOR and autophagy in progressive kidney disease and kidney aging. These studies have broad clinical implications and imply novel therapeutic strategies. Huber received his doctoral and medical degrees at the University Medical Center in Freiburg, where he also completed his fellowship in nephrology. He conducted his postdoctoral work with Thomas Benzing and Gerd Walz in Freiburg and with Andrey Shaw at Washington University in St. Louis, where his observations led to the discovery of novel protein complexes and functions of the slit diaphragm. Huber has received numerous awards, including the three highest research awards of the German Society of Nephrology and the Young Investigator Award of the American Society of Nephrology for his work on podocyte biology.
