Dr. Newton-Cheh received his BA from Dartmouth College, MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health. He completed clinical training in internal medicine and cardiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, where he also served as chief medical resident. He completed a postdoc at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT and the Framingham Heart Study. In 2007, Dr. Newton-Cheh joined as research faculty the Cardiovascular Research Center and the Center for Human Genetic Research, both at MGH, and is an affiliated scientist at the Broad Institute. He is an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a practicing cardiologist in the Heart Failure and Transplant Section at Massachusetts General Hospital. The Newton-Cheh laboratory seeks to identify fundamental mechanisms underlying heart failure, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, including drug-induced QT arrhythmias. We are leveraging the rapid growth of human genetics to identify genetic variants in genes known and previously unknown that underlie these diseases, to translate these genetic discoveries into an improved understanding of human physiology through clinically-focused research, and to define the role of genetics and other factors in predicting patients’ risk of disease and cardiotoxic drug response.
