Dr. Shah received his undergraduate, medical degrees, and postgraduate medical residency training from Northwestern University. He obtained fellowship training in clinical and basic research gastroenterology training at Yale University. After staying at Yale as a junior faculty for a brief time he was recruited to Mayo Clinic. Since that time he has rose to the rank of Professor of Medicine and Physiology. He oversees NIH funded programs in both clinical and laboratory based research in the area of chronic liver diseases. Dr. Shah's major and seminal contributions have related to identification and elucidation of key signaling pathways in liver vascular cells (sinusoidal endothelial cells and hepatic stellate cells) that contribute to cirrhosis and portal hypertension. His clinical studies have importantly expanded our ability to diagnose and manage alcoholic liver disease and other forms and complications of liver cirrhosis/portal hypertension.
