Elected 2011
Dr. Malhotra studies the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea and the pathophysiology of sleep apnea complications. His laboratory performs primarily human physiology, although also uses cell culture systems, rodent models and computational modeling and epidemiology/clinical trials when appropriate. The major focus of his laboratory is to develop novel therapeutic targets for sleep apnea with a view towards addressing a major public health need. The laboratory attempts to define causal pathways underlying sleep apnea in a given individual such that individualized therapy can be provided in a targeted manner. Ultimately, a personalized medicine approach to sleep apnea could be undertaken such that simple interventions could be provided to afflicted patients with a view towards improving well being and outcome of the patient.
