Peter is a general internist, health services researcher, and Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. He is the Division Director for General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics for Sinai Health System and University Health Network.  Peter received his MD degree from Wake Forest University and completed his residency, fellowship and MBA at the University of Michigan.  He was faculty at the University of Iowa from 2002-2013.  He was the Division Director for General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at the University of Iowa from 2010-2013.

Peter's research has focused on two principle areas:  1) using large administrative data files to study health system performance and healthcare utilization; 2) developing better methods to communicate test results to patients.  He has held continuous external funding from various sources including NIH, the VA healthcare system, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Intervention.

Since moving to Canada in 2014 much of his research has focused on international comparison of health system performance using "big data."  He is the co-founder of the international health system research collaborative (IHSRC) which has linked together health services researchers in multiple developed countries to evaluate and compare health systems.
