Our laboratory studies the role of inflammatory secondary tissue injury in hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke. Our investigations have centered primarily on the role of inflammatory microvascular dysfunction in the pathogenesis of reperfusion injury following ischemic stroke, and the role of complement cascade in both tissue injury and repair following ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. We have made notable use of several unique human translational models, particularly cerebral vasospasm in humans following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and cognitive dysfunction in humans following carotid revascularization. In the process of these studies we have helped develop convection enhanced intravascular hypothermia for use in the operating room and intensive care unit and have identified several novel neuroprotectant drugs which are in various stages of clinical trials. Additional areas of interest include the genetics of cerebral aneurysms and the refinement of surgical techniques for both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke prevention.
