Dr. Stephanie Lee’s research program focuses on outcomes of hematopoietic cell transplantation for hematologic malignancies. Her work helps broaden the discussion about the risks and benefits of transplantation by including consideration of patient-reported outcomes, late effects, and public policy perspectives. Her most recent studies focus on chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), quality of life, late medical complications, communication between physicians and patients about prognosis, and clinical practice variation. For example, one current study focuses on whether cancer patients truly wish to understand their prognoses, and what the effects of this understanding are on medical decisions and psychosocial status. Results will help inform the debate about just how “honest” consulting physicians can and should be about prognostic estimates. Another ongoing multi-institutional study is tracking patients with chronic GVHD to document the natural history, prognostic factors and biomarkers associated with this serious post-transplant complication. This cohort will also be used to test the 2006 NIH Consensus recommendations for the diagnosis, scoring and response assessment tools in chronic GVHD. Dr. Lee’s past projects have spanned outcomes and health services methodologies including novel methods of quantifying patient preferences, computer modeling of complex clinical decisions, and cost and cost-effectiveness analyses in transplantation.
