Dr. El-Serag’s research focuses on the clinical epidemiology and outcomes of several liver and GI disorders. His major achievement in research is the epidemiology and outcomes of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). His work of more than 150 publications (out of a total > 500) on this topic alone constitutes most of the modern literature on the epidemiology of HCC in the USA. This includes the first report of the rising trends in HCC incidence and mortality, its link to the hepatitis C epidemic, the association between diabetes and HCC, and racial differences in incidence, survival, and treatment. The seminal work on HCC, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, “Rising Incidence of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in the United States,” has been cited > 3000 times.  Currenly he is leading the Texas HCC Consortium, the largest prospective cirrhosis cohort in the country, as well as NIH P30 funded Digestive Disease Center. Dr. El- Serag 's other major clinical and research interest is the risk factors, treatment, and outcomes of Barrett 's esophagus and adenocarcinoma. As of early 2021, Dr. El-Serag has more than 500 papers (H index 136) to his credit, and more than 55 grants including NIH, VA and Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT).  In 2003, he was awarded the American Gastroenterology Association (AGA) Young Clinical Investigator Award, and in 2006 he received the prestigious “Masters” award from the AGA and 2013 Blue Ferry award. He was an associate editor for Gastroenterology, the most prestigious journal of this specialty and editor-in-chief for Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Dr. El-Serag was Chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Section, and currently serves as Chair, Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.  He is the past President of the American Gastroenterology Association.
