Geoffrey Pitt’s research has focused on how excitable cells are regulated by internal Ca2+. A particular area of interest has been to elucidate how Ca2+ acts as a feedback mechanism to control ion channel function. His work has uncovered novel mechanisms for Ca2+ regulation of voltage-gated channels by the Ca2+-binding protein calmodulin in the heart and the brain. These studies have implications in both the understanding of cardiovascular and neuronal physiology and in diseases, such as inherited arrhythmias. Through this work, he has expanded the general understanding about how calmodulin, the ubiquitous and most widely studied Ca2+-binding protein, participates in Ca2+signaling.
