Understanding the molecular mechanisms that underlie cellular differentiation and lineage selection is of fundamental importance for developmental biology and for cancer biology. We are interested in the transcriptional regulators that govern hematopoietic development and its disorders. Specifically, we study how hematopoietic transcription factors regulate the formation of erythroid cells and megakaryocytes. For example, we examine the mechanisms by which tissue-specific patterns of chromatin modifications are established. We are also interested in the regulation of transcription factors by posttranslational modifications such as acetylation. For our studies we combine molecular and biochemical analyses with studies in normal and gene targeted ES cells.
