Biographical statement

Dr. Rader received his undergraduate degree from Lehigh University and his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital and a fellowship in lipid metabolism at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. He is the Cooper-McClure Professor of Medicine at Penn, where he serves as Director of the Lipid/Atherosclerosis Research Unit, Director of the General Clinical Research Center, and Associate Director of the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics. Dr. Rader’s laboratory is focused on the mechanisms of the genetic and pharmacologic regulation of lipoprotein metabolism and atherosclerosis. He is especially known for his work on HDL metabolism and reverse cholesterol transport. His lab described a new enzyme, endothelial lipase, that has major effects on HDL metabolism and developed a novel assay for assaying the rate of reverse cholesterol transport in vivo. He directs a translational research program focusing on novel approaches to the pathogenesis and treatment of lipid disorders. Dr. Rader serves on the editorial boards of several journals, including Arteriosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, American Journal of Physiology, Circulation, Circulation Research, and Journal of Lipid Research. He is the immediate past Chair of the Scientific Board of the Sarnoff Endowment for Cardiovascular Science and is the recipient of several honors and awards, including the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Clinical Scientist Award in Translational Research, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award, and the Bristol Myers Squibb "Freedom to Discover" Unrestricted Cardiovascular Research Grant.
